For today’s tip on avoiding distracted driving I am going to create a scenario . . .
You’re driving around town running errands and every time you stop or go, your sons water bottle rolls across the floor of the car. After hitting your chair a couple times you decide to try and grab it off the floor and simultaneously take your eyes off the road. Anything could happen and you wouldn’t be prepared to react.
This scenario varies but is very common. To prevent this distraction, make sure we keep items like this stored away. The Mapfre tip of the day is . . .
Store loose gear, possessions and other distractions that could roll around in the car, so you do not feel tempted to reach for them on the floor or the seat.
Make sure you express to frequent passengers that everything has a place. If you have young athletes in the family. Create or purchase dividers so their athletic equipment doesn’t roll in the trunk. If you need to have more cup holders or storage containers, you can buy seat dividers in most superstores. Also, have a safe spot to put your purse or wallet so it doesn’t slide and spill open.
Always remember if you feel to need to pick something up when driving, please pullover before doing so. Distracted driving isn’t just texting. With so many things going on it is extremely easy to be distracted. For more information on distracted driving feel free to look at www.distraction.gov.
